Measuring home temperatures using an infrared thermometer
An excellent way to measure surface temperatures both inside and outside your home is to use
a digital Infrared Thermometer. These small hand held battery powered units cost from around £70,
they focus the infrared radiation emitted from an area of the measured remote surface onto a
sensor and continuously convert it to an accurate digitally displayed temperature.

Most digital infrared thermometers indicate the centre of the surface area measured by a red
laser spot. The area is directly proportional to the distance between the infrared thermometer
and the surface being measured, typically if this distance is 1 meter the diameter of the
measured area is 100mm.
IR thermometers are non-contact devices, that can be used to remotely measure temperatures in
all parts of your home and can also be used to rapidly locate areas hotter or colder than their
surroundings.
Infrared thermometers are ideal for measuring rotating, electrically live, very hot, or
hard-to-reach objects.
Other infrared thermometer uses include measuring body temperatures, cooking temperatures, outdoor
grill temperatures, refrigerator and freezer temperatures, liquid temperatures, clothes iron
temperatures, oven temperatures, soldering iron temperature, troubleshooting engines by locating
hot or cool spots, measuring the temperature of electronic components, diagnosis of cooling systems.
