Can We Save The World ?
Global warming, how can I help to reduce residential energy use
Many believe global warming poses the greatest threat to mankind’s future on earth. Energy conservation
is the lowest cost, easiest and simplest way to reduce the threat.
It’s hard for those who ask, ‘how can I help’, to find comprehensive practical advice on what we can each
do to assist energy conservation, to reduce residential energy use and the global warming threat, this web
site aims to do just that.
Most of us in the developed world are extraordinarily wasteful from an energy perspective. Become
energy aware, decide to be energy economical, or even better, energy frugal.
Everyone who does will reduce residential energy use, save money, and be improving the world for future
generations.
According to the latest statistics available at the moment from the Department of Energy (DOE):
- In 2005 energy used in homes was 22% of total US energy

- 51% of US Residential Energy was provided by natural gas, 41% by electricity, 4% by LPG, 3% by fuel oil,
and 1% by kerosene

- 47% of US residential energy was used for space heating, 30% for all appliances, 14% for water heating,
and 6% for air conditioning

- The current average annual US household energy cost for natural gas is $1,020, for electricity $1,200,
for fuel oil $1,300, for LPG $950, and for kerosene $370.
Until recent times we have been mostly unaware of the growing threat posed to our planet by what we can
now see as our extravagant use of energy.
Our personal lifestyles contribute to the global warming threat as we are energy users. If we accepted the
need for energy conservation, became energy aware, or even better energy frugal, we could
reduce residential energy use by more than 50% in a short
period of time, and cut our home energy costs by half saving many $100’s every year.
In the USA the Energy Star rating system has persuaded manufacturers to improve the efficiency of their
appliances, this appears to have contributed significantly to reducing energy waste. Many modern
appliances the author has tested are far more efficient in the USA than in the UK.
Native American Wisdom
"In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven
generations".
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children".
It is what we do, each and every one of us, how we live, and the choices we make, that will decide
both the quality of our own lives and the state of the planet we bequeath to the next seven generations
and beyond.
The pages of this website provide comprehensive practical advice on how to reduce home energy use.
Make a difference, take steps now to safeguard the environment for future generations, each one of
us can contribute by doing our bit and reduce residential energy use.
If you find the information on this website helpful please pass it on to friends and relatives. The
more people that reduce their energy use the less the threat will be to future generations.
